On Southwest airlines’ website, their winged heart logo appears on many pages, representing three values, love, fun, and freedom. Southwestern airlines took the heart as a reminder of where it first began at Dallas Love File airport using the tag line “Now there’s somebody else up there who loves you.” And later when the company expanded they chose LUV as their symbol. LUV was much more than the company’s ticker symbol or a persistent theme in Southwest’s advertising campaigns. Over the years, LUV grew into Southwest’s code word for treating both employees and customers with dignity and respect, demonstrating and caring, and loving attitude. The word LUV and red hearts commonly appeared on banners and posters at company facilities, as reminders of the empathy that was expected toward customers and other employees. Southwest’s planes were referred to as love birds, drinks became love potions, peanuts were called love bites, drink coupons were love stamps, and tickets were printed on love machines.
FUN is the core value of Southwest airlines, which is symbolize by entertainment and humor. Employees at Southwest can use humor, tell jokes, and play games with travelers while they are checking in, or waiting for the flight, or flying on the plan. They also spend fun time out of their work parting, playing games for charity, dressing in customs, and having a good time together as a one big family.
Wings on the Southwest’s heart are symbol of FREEDOM, the third value that made the company at the second position in America’s best airlines (Travel and Leisure, 2008). The company’s main goal is to give the freedom for its customers to travel at the lowest costs. “We are a low fare airline by philosophy. When we go into a new market our competitors usually lower their fares. The difference is our fares stay low – whatever and whenever we fly.” Said Gary C. Kelly, Vice President -Finance, Chief Financial Officer. The slogans “Low fares. No hidden fees” and “No fees” are also very frequent lines that appear on the company’s website. They stand for the low cost or no fees services such as, no first class and second class checked bag fees, no phone reservation fees, and no snack fees.
THANKS!
